Recession in UK Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Recession in UK - Essay Example Bankruptcy and unemployment on the other hand rises (Office for National Statistics, 2010). The general belief in the cause of inflation is that recession comes after there is an extensive drop in spending. In combating the problem of inflation, governments usually adopts expansionary macroeconomic policies. These involve increasing the amount of money in circulation, decreasing taxation and increasing government spending. In looking at the case of the UK Economy, it is a good example of the whole process of the period before recession and the macroeconomic conditions prevailing then, the start of recession and the conditions then, the whole recession period and the effect of the government actions on macroeconomic parameters and finally how the economy managed to come out of the recession. The recession in UK economy began after it had experienced two quarters of negative growth in the period between June and December of the year 2008. This led to the falling of the GDP by 1.5 percent during the three last months of the year after the previous quarter had dropped by 0.6%. This is the biggest decline in GDP between two quarters ever recorded after the year 1980. This second quarter experienced the biggest fall in GDP within the same period or quarter. This recession lasted for a period of 18 months and it is the longest recession in the UK economy ever. The economy was characterized by an increased public borrowing of up to approximately 178 bn, and the GDP went down by 6%. Credit Crunch is one of the factors that have been experienced in the UK economy during the recession period. This is an unexpected shortage of money for giving out as loans. As expected this leads to a fall in the amount of loans available. This can be caused by a sudden increase in interest rates, drying up of funds in the capital markets and a control of money directly by a government (Finance Blog, 2010). In the case of the UK recession, the credit crunch was as a result of a sharp increase in subprime mortgages which originated in America but the result was felt in the rest of the world. In the UK, not many bad mortgages where given out like in the US, as it was better controlled than in the US. This however led to a serious problem for Northern Rock which had a high percentage of loans which where risky. It was not able to raise enough funds when the crisis came by in the capital market. It thus resulted to asking the Bank of England to be given emergency funds. Because of this, the customers did not have faith with the bank any more and they thus started withdrawing their funds from the bank. The credit crunch has resulted in an increase in the price for mortgages in UK where mortgages have become expensive (UK Economy Ltd). Another factor experienced due to the recession is falling in prices for houses. This is as a result of the high cost of mortgages which has led to a fall in demand for houses. As a result, the price of houses has been forced to come down and this is a show that many are met with a negative equity. When the prices for houses are low, it means that the banks are not able to get back the initial loan. This has affected the firms dealing with such business like Bradford & Bingley which had specialized in buying and letting which is affected by falling house prices. There is a collapse in confidence in the entire sector of finance. This result in loss of confidence on

Problem Set 5 - Externalities and Efficiency Assignment

Problem Set 5 - Externalities and Efficiency - Assignment Example Use a supply and demand diagram to illustrate your answer and provide no more than five sentences of explanation. When prices are set below the equilibrium, i.e P2, there will be an increased demand in the houses by the population. Since supply remains constant as demand rises, there will be a shortage in the short run. However, in the long run, people will tend to build their own houses or property owners will develop more to avoid the shortages. This increases the supply of the houses and reducing shortages. (Figure: Market for Vaccines) The figure represents the market for vaccines with external benefits. The efficient level of output is __1,800______ vaccines, which is ___greater_____ than the markets output. 5. Suppose Tesco (A) and Sainsbury’s (B) both emit pollutants when producing their plastic bags used by customers to collect and carry their groceries home. The government enforces regulations saying that neither firm can release more than 10 units of pollutants. (Assume that pollutants can be measured in discrete and comparable units.) Currently Tesco releases 10 units and Sainsbury’s releases 11 units. The government requires Sainsbury’s to reduce its pollution by 1 unit – the company can do this, but at a cost of  £1,000. Tesco, however, can reduce its pollution by 1 unit for a cost of  £400. Sainsbury’s wants to save money by trading allowances with Tesco. After negotiations, Tesco agrees to see one unit of pollutant to Sainsbury’s for  £650. From the diagram, P1 and Q1 are the equilibrium price and quantity respectively. In the short run the time is too short for firms to adjust production. However, in the long run, firms will increase output to Q2 and charge high price P2 due to an increase in shock demand. This leads to demand curve to shift from D1 to D2. This will make the firms to make abnormal profits. Since there is free entry, the excess profits will attract more firms into the market.

heroarms A Comparison of Code Heroes of A Farewell to Arms and For Who

The Code Heroes of A Farewell to Arms and For Whom the Bell Tolls      Ã‚  Ã‚  In Ernest Hemingway's fiction, there is something known as the "Hemingway Hero".   This term is usually applied to the male protagonist in his works.   The Hemingway hero illustrates a variety of traits, ranging from heavy drinking to his role as a leader among the characters with whom he interacts.   Traits of this hero also resemble the personal characteristics of Hemingway himself, and the hero usually finds himself in similar predicaments Hemingway faced in his life.   Two Hemingway heroes, Robert Jordan from For Whom the Bell Tolls and Frederic Henry from A Farewell to Arms, exhibit the traits established in Hemingway's heroic code.   Given the presence of war in each novel, the two heroes display leadership in some form many times.   Jordan and Henry also mature to realize that they hold the capacity to love as each develops an intimate relationship with a woman they meet.   Just as Ernest Hemingway aided the injured in the Great War, Frederic Henry d rives an ambulance for the Italian army in the same war.   And although Hemingway did not fight in the Spanish Civil War as Robert Jordan does, he wrote newspaper articles covering the war in order to publicize the Republican struggle.   The hero Hemingway creates in his fiction serves several purposes.   Through his heroes, Hemingway idealizes his beliefs about life and how men should act as well as events in his own life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Since Hemingway's time, literary critics have defined his heroic code to include the following:   The Hemingway hero does not believe in the afterlife, is brave, strong and seeks pleasure,   thinks cowardliness is disgraceful, believes in grace, courage and discipline, thinks de... ...as collecting important information about the bridge for Robert.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Frederic Henry, on the other hand, has little respect for discipline, and intern, displays hardly any of his own.   Henry begins the war helping the Italian Army, serving as an ambulance driver.   He receives an injury to his leg, and after recovering, deserts the army when he becomes separated from the rest of the army during a retreat......    Works Cited Hemingway, Ernest. Persenal Narrative on Stress Essay

Personal Narrative Stress is something that I hate in life. I have this stress of my grades in school and scared they might drop. In addition, I also have stress of thinking of my future and what I am going to do when I’m done with high school. However, if the stress becomes too much, I go to the mall or somewhere else and get a massage so I can relax and push all that stress that I had. Well the first stress I have is that since I am in school I always have stress about my grades. Since of all the work they give me it takes me longer to finish my work and because of that, I do not really get enough sleep. Therefore, because of not enough sleep I end up waking up mad and all stressed out. Another reason why I worry about my grades causes my stress is that my grades will be the only way I will have a future and a career when I am an adult. The next stress I have is when I start thinking about my future and thinking about which college I want to go to, I start thinking how far is it going to be. I also start thinking about the cost and how much scholarships I need in order to be able to go to the college that I want, like the college that I want to go to is the University of Central Florida. In addition, also start trying to think what career I want so I will be able to pay my bills and support my family. A few things I do in order to take away the stress is to either go to the mall or somewhere else or get massage. After my massage is over with, I feel like I am a brand-new that nothing and I can stop me. Until I get the stress back then I just go back to get a massage. On the other hand, what I will do is go and chill with my friends. What make it relaxing is that my friends and I, just make fun of each other, tell jokes, and tell funny things that have happen in our lives. In conclusion, for me stress is something I hate a lot. It makes me unable to sleep since I am all ways worrying about my grades. It makes me stress of my future, if I will be able to get into the University of Central Florida, and of what career I want to have so I can support my family. However, when I start getting too much stress I would go to the mall or somewhere else and get a massage or just go and chill with my friends to have a good time.

The hexagram lines are traditionally counted from the bottom up, so the lowest line is considered line one while the top line is line six. It has been regarded as the defining virtue of a junzi/gentlemen and the ultimate commitment in Confucius thought. However, Confucius never intends to offer a formal definition of ren; instead, he gives only various answers to questions about ren in different circumstances for students with different temperaments and with varying degrees of understanding. f. yi (in the Analects)- Yi is another important virtue through which ren is cultivated. Confucius stresses yi as necessary for developing ren. Like Kant’s conception of good will and duty, what is according to yi unconditional and absolute; some actions must be performed only because they are right, and not because of what they produce. On the other hand, unlike Kant, yi is not something that has nothing to do with inclination, disposition or intuition. Origins and Use of Amaranth in Prehistoric America

Amaranth is a grain with high nutrition value, comparable to those of maize and rice. Amaranth has been a staple in Mesoamerica for thousands of years, first collected as a wild food, and then domesticated at least as early as 4000 BC. The edible parts are the seeds, which are consumed whole toasted or milled into flour. Other uses of amaranth include dye, forage and ornamental purposes. Amaranth is a plant of the family of Amaranthaceae. About 60 species are native to the Americas, whereas less numerous are the species originally from Europe, Africa, and Asia. The most widespread species are native to North, Central and South America, and these are A. Cruentus, A. caudatus, and A. hypochondriacus. Amaranthus cruentus, and A. hypochondriacus are native of Mexico and Guatemala. The first one is used in Mexico to produce typical sweets called alegrà a, in which the amaranth grains are toasted and mixed with honey or chocolate. Amaranthus caudatus is a widely distributed staple food both in South America and in India. This species originated as one of the staple foods for the ancient inhabitants of the Andean region. Amaranth Domestication Amaranth was probably widely used among hunter-gatherers in both North and South America. The wild seeds, even if small in size, are produced in abundance by the plant and are easy to collect. Evidence of domesticated amaranth seeds comes from the Coxcatlan cave in the Tehuacan valley of Mexico and dates as early as 4000 BC. Later evidence, like caches with charred amaranth seeds, has been found throughout the US Southwest and the Hopewell culture of the US Midwest. Domesticated species are usually larger and have shorter and weaker leaves which make the collection of the grains simpler. As other grains, seeds are collected through rubbing the inflorescences between the hands. Use of Amaranth in ancient Mesoamerica In ancient Mesoamerica, amaranth seeds were commonly used. The Aztec/Mexica cultivated large quantities of amaranth and it was also used as a  form of tribute payment. Its name in Nahuatl was huauhtli. Among the Aztecs, amaranth flour was used to make baked images of their patron deity, Huitzilopochtli, especially during the festival called Panquetzaliztli, which means â€Å"raising banners†. During these ceremonies, amaranth dough figurines of Huitzilopochtli were carried around in processions and then divided up among the population. The Mixtecs of Oaxaca also recognized a great importance to this plant. The precious Postclassic turquoise mosaic covering the skull encountered within Tomb 7 at Monte Alban was actually kept together by a sticky amaranth paste. Cultivation of amaranth decreased and almost disappeared in Colonial times, under the Spanish rule. The Spanish banished the crop because of its religious importance and use in ceremonies that the newcomers were trying to extirpate.
